DEKALB COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

An off-duty Atlanta police officer has been relieved from duty with pay after driving the wrong way down the interstate and crashing into a bus Thursday morning.

DeKalb County police said Officer Christopher J. Niezurawski was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of I-85 when his SUV struck a Greyhound bus going southbound between I-285 and Pleasantdale Road just before 5 a.m.

Niezurawski, who police said is suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol, was treated and released from Grady Memorial Hospital with minor injuries.

None of the 30 bus passengers or driver was injured.

Niezurawski was charged with DUI, reckless driving, and operating a vehicle going the wrong way.

Niezurawski, who has been employed with the Atlanta Police Department since June 2004, was relieved from duty with pay, pending the outcome of an investigation by the department's Office of Professional Standards.

Passengers from the bus were loaded onto another bus and transported to the Atlanta bus terminal after the accident. Many said the crash shook them up.

"It was like CRAAAMMMMM!!!" said Tisha Pollard, a passenger describing the accident.

"He was going the wrong way. He could have killed everybody on that bus," said Dorothy Durham, another passenger.

The bus was traveling from Richmond, Va., to Atlanta. A spokesperson from Greyhound said the driver has been with the company since 1989.

Back in March 2011, Niezurawski was injured after a car turned into his motorcycle in downtown Atlanta. He was on duty at the time of the accident.
