Riverdale boy says he was beaten by private school pastor

Posted: Updated:

A fifth grader at Hope Christian Academy said he was viciously beaten by the head of his school, Pastor Robert Taylor.

Desmond Omigie, 11, said that on May 8 he had gotten into a fight with a student at school, when Taylor came to talk to him about it.

"He began to take off his belt," Desmond said. "And then he told me to bend over and touch my toes."

That's when he said the lashings began, and his father, Felix Omigie, and grandmother Frankie Moore, said they left dark bruises on his bottom that lasted more than a week, and made it painful for him to sit down.

"He looked like he hit him with all of his might," Moore said.

CBS Atlanta's Sonia Moghe spoke with Taylor on the phone, who declined an interview, but said that he did hit Desmond with his belt.

"I whipped him a belt - five licks with a belt," Taylor said. "We get permission from the children's parents. It's very rare that we spank a child."

When asked about Taylor's claim that he had parents' permission to hit students, Moore disagreed.

"I don't know if they [the mom and dad] did [give permission] or not and, if she did, that's well and good - but not to abuse him," Moore said. "There's a difference in a whipping and a beating, and he inflicted a beating on my grandson."
