DeKalb County 12-year-old shoots himself in backside while skipping school

Posted: Updated:

A 12-year-old boy had to be taken to the hospital after he accidentally shot himself in the backside while skipping school on Thursday morning in DeKalb County.

The shooting happened in a wooded area near Montclair Elementary School off Buford Highway.

DeKalb County police said the boy was with two other teens, ages 16 and 17, and the group had skipped school to burglarize homes.

At first DeKalb County police had officers spread throughout the neighborhood surrounding the school searching for a suspect. Less than 20 minutes after questioning the teens who were with the shooting victim when he shot himself, investigators determined the gunshot to be self-inflicted.

"The 12-year-old had the gun and accidentally shot himself," DeKalb County Director of Public Safety William "Whiz" Miller said during a news conference.

The boy was taken to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite for treatment. His condition wasn't released by police.

Once the all clear was given, dozens of worried mothers who waited hours to see their children rushed inside Montclair Elementary school to pull their kids out.

"It's terrifying. This stuff happens all the time, and that's a parent's worst nightmare to say, 'OK, is my child OK,'" concerned parent Teneka Trice said.

After learning what the teens were up to, parents were furious.

"That's terrible. Kids should be in school," Trice said. "Parents need to tighten up, do their jobs, protect their kids and just teach them the right way."
