Atlanta officers shoot, kill man at shopping mall

The Fulton County Medical Examiner has released the name of the fugitive who was shot and killed by Atlanta officers Wednesday night. They said the man was Christopher Calhoun, 38, of Mississippi.

Atlanta police officers were forced to shoot and kill Calhoun, a wanted fugitive, outside an Atlanta mall, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

The shooting happened at about 8:40 p.m. in the parking lot of the West End Mall on Lee Street in southwest Atlanta.

GBI agents spent most of the night concentrating on the SUV. They towed it from the scene at about 4:30 a.m. Thursday.

"I heard the gunshots real clearly," said nearby resident Myron Lamar, who was at the mall to meet a friend. "About the time I got to the mall door, that's when I heard the gunshots ringing out, and one of the Atlanta mall officers ran out, too, and they had a shootout."

Nichole Johnson told CBS Atlanta News that she was inside the mall when the shooting happened. When she walked outside, the scene was chaotic, she said.

"It was people out here trying to figure out what was going on," she said. "There were people at the door looking on. There was a body on the ground. He was bloody. Police were everywhere. There was a helicopter. They were roping off the crime scene."
