Need to renew your Georgia driver's license? You may have to do some digging to find the required documents to prove your identity.

As of July 1, Georgia has adopted the Federal Real ID Act of 2005.

The Georgia Department of Driver Services will begin issuing new 'Secure IDs' on Tuesday to those with the correct documentation.

Now, when you go to renew or replace an existing license or ID, you will need to bring a few more pieces of documentation to your nearest DDS office.

When you apply, you must bring your original or certified copy of your birth certificate. An unexpired passport will be accepted in the place of a birth certificate.  You must also bring proof of your social security number and two documents to prove your residential address.

On Tuesday, the first day that Driver Services offices opened since the new requirements were implemented, a line formed before the door even opened at the customer service center in downtown Atlanta. Cars circled the packed parking lot waiting for a spot.

Customers gave mixed opinions about the stiffer requirements.

"That's too much," said Debra Flowers of Atlanta. "I'd rather just fill out the papers and show where I live."

Victor Donnelly, a newcomer to Georgia, saw it differently.

"You use your driver's license for a lot of things - voter registration and a lot of very important things that you do in your life," Donnelly said. "I think it should be valid. And I'd hate to see someone using my information to go do something that I don't want them to do."

Georgia Department of Driver Services officials said there's no need to rush to the nearest customer service facility to get the new license. Customers are asked to come when their licenses are about to expire, which for some, will be years from now. After getting the new 'Secure ID,' a customer can later renew it online.
