GWINNETT COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

Gwinnett County police are investigating a fatal accident that happened early Tuesday morning in unincorporated Sugar Hill.

Due to the severe injuries sustained in the crash, investigators had a difficult time positively identifying the victims.

The victims have tentatively been identified as James P. Gifford, 30, of Ellijay, and Thomas Hawkins, 21, of Snellville. Investigators are waiting on confirmation through dental records.

Police said Gifford was driving a dark gray BMW 740i, heading north on Sycamore Road when he lost control. The car crossed over the double yellow line and went off the west side of the road, striking a tree.

After hitting the tree, the car caught fire.

When the fire was extinguished, both Gifford and Hawkins were found dead.

It is believed that the two were traveling to Lake Lanier after leaving an Alcoholics Anonymous class.

Anyone with information regarding this accident are encouraged to call the Gwinnett County Police Accident Investigation Unit at 678-442-5626.
