ROSWELL, GA (CBS46) -

One man was killed and his roommate critically injured when the car in which they were traveling ran off a road near the Chattahoochee River late Sunday night.

Roswell Police Officer Lisa Holland said emergency responders found the car against a tree at approximately 11:30 p.m. with two people trapped inside.

The car had been heading southbound on Riverside Road just before Northcliff Trace when it left the road and struck a large tree, Holland said.

The driver, Samuel Wiggins, 20, of Roswell, was killed on impact and the passenger, his roommate, Dylan Rigsby, 19, was rushed to North Fulton Medical Center in critical condition.

"They both had their seatbelts on, but the impact was so bad that the driver was knocked over into the passenger's lap," Holland said.

Holland said speed may have been a factor in the crash. There were no signs of alcohol use in or around the vehicle.  Holland said she wonders if the driver might have swerved to avoid a deer or other animal in the roadway.

Rigsby remained in a medically induced coma Monday morning, Holland said.
