Same-sex marriage advocates to support Starbucks Tuesday

ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Same-sex marriage activists are planning to head to Starbucks in droves Tuesday.

Atlanta based Equally Wed, an online lesbian and gay wedding magazine, dreamed up the idea to support businesses that are for marriage equality.

"We created National Marriage Equality Day as an emotional reaction to Mike Huckabee's Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day and what we were seeing on the news and on Facebook newsfeeds: People eagerly flocking to a fast-food restaurant that donates some of its profits--$5 million to be specific--to hate groups working directly against marriage equality, hate groups that want to ensure that my wife and I remain second-class citizens in this country," said Cofounder and Editor in Chief Kirsten Ott Palladino. "We wanted to answer that day with a day where our community and our allies could use love, not hate, to lift up companies and nonprofits that are pro-equality for everyone, not just for some."

But will the day make as big of an impact as Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day?

"I don't know. It's not a competition. It's a chance for those people who were negatively affected on Aug. 1 to feel empowered again," said Palladino. "We can do something. We can spread awareness. We can give our money to HRC and Freedom to Marry, organizations that are working tirelessly to ensure that we have equal rights as tax-paying citizens of the United States of America. We can not only boycott companies that don't want us to have those equal rights, but we can support companies that do."

So far, more than 32,000 people have signed up on the magazine's Facebook page to participate.

The event wasn't planned too far away from Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day because Palladino said she didn't want the movement to lose momentum.

"EquallyWed.com will continue this as an annual event on every Aug. 7, and you can bet that next year will have an even greater widespread effect with long-term planning," said Palladino.

Starbucks is one of dozens of companies listed on Equally Wed's website as supporters of LGBT rights.

Others include Delta, Macy's, Apple, Southwest Airlines, Nike, and Target.
