A Fulton County mother and her boyfriend have been found guilty of killing the woman's 2-year-old son.
On Tuesday, a jury convicted Nikita Moore, 25, and her boyfriend Reginald Johnson, 27, on charges of murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, aggravated battery and cruelty to children in connection with the death of Makel Moore-Thompkins.
The Fulton County District Attorney's Office said on Dec. 9, 2010, the couple took Makel to South Fulton Hospital. He was unresponsive and suffered from a fractured skull, bleeding on his brain and facial bruises. He was pronounced dead the next day.
The DA said Moore and Johnson admitted disciplining the child with a belt in an attempt to potty train him, but said they did not know how he injured his head.
During a search of the couple's home, investigators found pillows and sheets stained with the toddler's blood.
According to the Medical Examiner's report, Makel had more than 40 injuries throughout his body, both old and new, indicating a history of abuse.
Moore and Johnson were sentenced to life plus 15 years in prison.
