First Lady Deal reminds drivers: Stop for school busses

COBB COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

Georgia First Lady Sandra Deal was in Cobb County Thursday morning, reminding drivers that a school bus stop sign is just as valid as any other roadway stop sign.

Deal presented the reminder at Clarkdale Elementary School.

Her campaign found that districts across the state have had more than 4,000 instances of drivers ignoring bus stop signs and speeding by as children were getting on or off.

The message? Drivers caught illegally passing by school busses will be fined.

"In this economy, (paying the fine) hurts," Deal said. "But on the other hand, if we're weighing it against the life of a child, the child's life is much greater."

For the past two years, Georgia has led the nation with the most deaths of children getting on or off the bus.
