Banks County High School no longer on lockdown after shooting

Posted: Updated:
HOMER, GA (CBS46) -

The lockdown at Banks County High School in Homer, GA has been lifted after a student shot himself around 8 Friday morning.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the male student shot himself inside the school, in "an isolated area." No other students were around when it happened, according to the GBI.

It was unclear whether the shooting was accidental.

"People were running around outside, and we didn't understand what happened," said freshman student Colin Knutsen. "They just locked the doors, and they didn't tell us anything."

The school was put on lockdown while GBI and school officials investigated the area.

The gun was later found by police.

The student's condition was unknown. He was airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital in downtown Atlanta, according to the GBI.
