JONESBORO, GA (CBS46) -

A 4-year-old girl is in serious condition after she was shot while riding in her mother's van in Jonesboro.

It happened around 11:15 a.m. on Highway 54 near Towngate Boulevard.

The mother told police she was driving the van west on Highway 54 with her four children inside when she heard a popping sound, according to a Clayton County police officer at the scene.

When the woman turned around to check on her children, she saw her 4-year-old daughter slumped over in her car seat with a gunshot wound.

The mother called 911 and tried to help her daughter until paramedics arrived.

The girl was airlifted to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston for treatment. Officers at the scene said she was in critical condition.

Police did not say whether the girl shot herself or if she was shot by someone else inside the van.

Investigators later found the gun inside the van, which they impounded, for investigation.

A Clayton County police spokesperson said police could file charges in the shooting.
