Gwinnett officers arrest man in attempted kidnapping at Bay Creek Park

GWINNETT COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

A community was shocked Tuesday after an attempted kidnapping at a little league football practice.

It happened at Bay Creek Park in Loganville.

Police said Jean Souffrant tried to verbally and physically get kids to come with him.

It was a scary situation for both the kids and the parents. So scary they immediately called 911, which police said helped them to make a big arrest.

Brenda Laureano is a regular at the park and was shocked to hear the news.

"That's just really scary. I bring my kids here all the time," said Laureano.

It's a park she thought was safe until this happened.

What makes this case even scarier is police said it wasn't just a man offering kids candy.

"He was grabbed at the concession stand. His arm was grabbed and he was led around football field to one of the entrances to the park," said Detective James Flanagan with the Gwinnett County Police Department.

The boy got away and parents immediately called 911. Police were not only able to get there quick enough to catch the suspect, but all the witnesses too.

"To have that kind of information from as many resources as we had coming in makes it an easier case to work and you get a person off the streets where it could have been a much worse situation," said Flanagan.

The arrest came as a big relief to the public. Vickie Morgan was shocked to hear the news of an attempted kidnapping, but happy to hear he was arrested.

"I think it is utterly ridiculous that we have these kinds of people out there that are just trying to abuse our children. Whatever happens to him he deserves it," said Flanagan.

Despite the arrest, the parents we spoke with said they will still be keeping an extra close eye on their kids now.
