Neighbors at the Gladstone Apartments in southeast Atlanta said a man with a gun chased after his girlfriend through their apartment complex, kicking in doors, firing shots, and eventually ending his own life.
"He ran and shot at her through the rental office and then he said, 'Tell my momma I love her' and shot himself," said a friend, who did not want to give her name.
Friends identified the gunman as 20-year-old Bernard Cook.
Neighbor Cathy Harris said that even before shots were fired, he damaged parts of the apartment in a fit of rage.
"He went to somebody else apartment, kicked that door in," Harris said.
A woman who would only identify herself as an aunt of the gunman said she didn't know what sparked the incident.
"No we don't know what set it off," she said.
The man was declared dead on the scene. Atlanta Police officials said the investigation is now in the hands of the Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office. No one else was shot.
