CARTERSVILLE, GA (CBS46) -

Cartersville police have identified the woman fatally stabbed Tuesday morning at Alexandria Landing Apartments.

Police said Deandre Davough Hightower, 20, killed Candice Piper, 29, stabbing her multiple times.

Police said Hightower is a drifter who has ID's in 10 states. Police believe he and Piper met online. Her family can't comprehend how a caring, compassionate person could lose her life in such a brutal attack.

"I woke up in the morning, told her I loved her and I'd see her later. I went on to work, that was the last time I saw her," brother David Piper said.

The nurse was found stabbed multiple times in the chest and back. Police found Hightower hiding in nearby woods. A woman Candice Piper used to work with was staying on her couch. She told police she heard a fight between the two and called 911.

"She didn't like confrontation. She didn't like arguing with anybody. She was the type of person if she saw them in distress, she would try do something to help. She just didn't deserve it," said Piper.

Piper said the attack happened soon after his sister returned to her apartment from staying at the family home in Paulding County so she could take her dad to a doctor's appointment.

"Why? What was going through his mind? Why would he think about doing something to somebody that all they do is help people," Piper said.

Police believe Hightower had stayed at Candice Piper's apartment for about four days. Cartersville Police Chief Thomas Culpepper has a warning about internet sites.

"Certainly people need to exercise caution. What someone says on the internet might not be the package when they arrive so we would caution people to be aware," Culpepper said.

"Anything that happens to him, I don't have any sorrow for him. That's my family and now she's gone and I'll never get to see her again and she leaves behind four nieces who loved her," Piper said.

Hightower will have a first court appearance Thursday morning. He's charged with murder, aggravated battery, aggravated assault, and two counts of false imprisonment.
