GWINNETT COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

A Gwinnett County Sheriff's deputy resigned on Wednesday after he was charged with DUI and crashed his patrol car.

The Georgia State Patrol was called to the crash at 1:20 a.m. on Georgia Highway 81 at Double Springs Road in Walton County.

According to the trooper, a Gwinnett County Sheriff's Department car driven by Robert Christopher Matt, 27, ran off the road, struck an embankment and overturned several times.

No one was around the vehicle when first responders arrived.

Matt's passenger, Katie Lynn, 27, was found walking near the crash scene.

Lynn was taken by ambulance to Gwinnett Medical for treatment of injuries.

Matt was found at his residence with cuts, scrapes, bumps and bruises.

Matt was charged with driving under the influence, leaving the scene of an accident, failing to maintain lane and open container and was taken to the Walton County Jail.

Deputy Matt submitted his resignation from the Sheriff's Office effective immediately. He had been employed since November of 2008, and was assigned to the Civil Unit.

Sheriff Conway stated that he was highly disappointed in the actions of Deputy Matt.
