Barrow deputies: Home invaders threatened kids with hammer
BARROW COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -
A day off from school turned into a very scary one for some kids in Barrow County.
Deputies said two masked men broke into a house in Auburn with three kids inside.
The suspects got away with some electronics, but the kids are all safe.
When the suspects first broke into the house, the kids, two girls and an infant, locked themselves in an upstairs bedroom, according to police. One of the suspects came in anyway, breaking down the door, armed with a hammer.
"He didn't assault them with the hammer but did make a motion raising hand back like he would or could if they didn't comply with demands," said Lt. Matt Guthas with the Barrow County Sheriff's Department.
The kids were told not to call police, but they did anyway.
"I think they did a great job. They were really brave and thought fast with thinking on their feet to do that," said Guthas. "They locked the door and it was forcefully entered. That's not their fault, but I thought they were brave and very conscientious to take the step they did, especially at speed which they did."
Still neighbors were concerned with what a scary situation like that might do to them.
"It's gonna be traumatic for those kids," a neighbor said. "They have to live with this for the rest of their lives."
Deputies are hoping a quick arrest helps ease some of the pain and the young victims could play a big part in that.
Deputies said the victims may have recognized some of the suspects including two people that never came inside.
"We definitely don't think it's random. We do think there's connections between suspects and victim's family that lived there or lived there in past. We're currently chasing down those leads," said Guthas.
Deputies said the suspects they're looking for might be the same people that recently sold the family some electronics. The items reported stolen were electronics.
