COBB COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

The Cobb County Commission has denied a request by the Walmart on Powder Springs Road to sell alcohol, leaving some nearby church members happy.

The decision came during Tuesday morning's commission meeting.

According to a Cobb County ordinance, businesses within 600 feet of a church are not permitted to sell alcohol.

However, the store tried to get its next-door neighbor, the Pine Grove Baptist Church, to sign a waiver, allowing the store to get the alcohol license.

While some Walmart customers supported the alcohol license, CBS Atlanta News spoke to some church members who opposed it, including Lamar Leavell.

"If we allow this and we don't protest it, then those people that have wrecks and get killed, God is going to punish us for it," Leavell said.
