Police in Cartersville were led on a short foot chase after a wanted sex offender fled during a traffic stop.

On Wednesday, officers made a traffic stop at the intersection of Grassdale Road and Highway 41 because of an obstructed tag frame.

The driver pulled into the QuikTrip parking lot at 1364 J. F. Harris Pkwy. and came to a stop.

The officer checked the driver's license and proof of insurance. He also requested identification from the front seat passenger Timothy Roy Smith Jr.

Smith told the officer he did not have any identification on him. He also told the officer his name was Tim Smith, according to police reports.

A background check revealed Smith had two outstanding warrants for his arrest for probation violation through Cherokee County Sheriff's office.

Police said he also failed to register as sex offender through Paulding County Sheriff's office.

When a Bartow deputy arrived on scene to help, Smith ran from the car and fled across Highway 41 toward Grassdale Road.

Smith was arrested in the wood line at Trinity Baptist Church.

He was taken to the Bartow County Jail. He was arrested and charged with the two outstanding warrants, probation violation and failure to register as sex offender, and obstruction.
