A DeKalb County woman has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for defrauding dozens of senior citizens out of thousands of dollars while using a confusing alias.

A DeKalb County Superior Court judge handed down the 43-year total sentence to Santee Roberts after she was found guilty of identity fraud, elder exploitation, financial transaction fraud and racketeering.

A spokesman for the DeKalb County District Attorney's Office said Roberts registered a cell phone under the name "Georgia Powers" and impersonated Georgia Power employees to demand payment from her victims.

Roberts attempted to defraud 86 people under the alias, and a significant number of those people were seniors.

"The defendants purchased a cell phone and registered it under the alias ‘Georgia Powers' and began targeting seniors," said District Attorney Robert James. "When a victim would check the caller ID, it would read similar to the local power company."

Roberts would then demand that the victims immediately pay their utility bill or their power would be turned off, James said.

Roberts was able to get personal information from the victims, including credit card numbers, through her demands.

Roberts was never an employee for Georgia Power.
