CLAYTON COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

Clayton County police shot a man armed with a knife Monday afternoon.

It happened in the 5000 block of Old Dixie Road.

Police said at about 2 p.m., they got a call about a "demented man with a knife."

When officers arrived, police said the man made aggressive movements toward them.

Lt. Chris Windley told CBS Atlanta News that the man would not put down the knife and that officers fired several shots at him.

He would not say how many officers fired their weapons or how many shots were fired.

The man was taken to the hospital.

A witness, who did not want to be identified, told CBS Atlanta News the man with the knife initially walked up to his friend and asked him to call police. He said it didn't appear the man was threatening his friend, but his friend did call police.

The witness described the scene once police arrived.

"The man had the knife to his throat and told police he was going to kill himself. He told them to 'shoot him, shoot him.' And  basically that's what happened."

The GBI is investigating, which is standard protocol in an officer-involved shooting.
