Parent discovers sex offender working at a Fulton County school

Posted: Updated:

A Fulton County parent has some Tough Questions for the Fulton County School District after he discovered a convicted sex offender working at his children's middle school.

The parent, Bobby Wilcox, said the man was a band assistant at Bear Creek Middle School.

"I decided to do a sex offender search to see how many were in our area," said Wilcox.

Wilcox says the search turned up a familiar face, his neighbor Demetrius Mandell Thompson.

According to Georgia Bureau of Investigation Sex Offender website, Thompson was convicted of aggravated child molestation. Until this week, he was also a volunteer at BCMS.

"What my daughter told me first was that is the guy who was passing pizza out at the football game. My son said he was on the field trip with them at Centennial Park on our bus," said Wilcox.

Wilcox said he got a call from the school principal after reporting the problem.

"The principal told me Thompson slipped through because his name was misspelled and his address was altered. I am thinking, 'This is how it happened?' So I am like OK, this person filled out an application that is considered a legal document because you have to sign it, so why wasn't his identification checked," asked Wilcox.

Monday night the school notified parents through robotic calls and an email that says in part, "The Fulton County School Police immediately notified the parent that they are banned from all school campuses, and that parent's probation officer was notified. School staff also checked the sex offender registry for all surrounding municipalities for all guardians and emergency contacts at our school.'"

Wilcox is concerned more kids may be in danger.

"Where else is it happening? As I was always told, where there is one, there is always more. How many more are there in these schools now," asked Wilcox.
