Community mourns after Local R&B singer killed in accident

Brandi Williams and Shamari Fears-DeVoe are struggling to deal with the death of Natina Reed.

The childhood friends made up the late 90s R&B group Blaque.

"I don't really feel like it's real. I feel like I am walking in a nightmare," said Williams.

Gwinnett County police said Reed was crossing Lawrenceville Highway near Hamilton Road Friday night when she was hit and killed by a car.

Reed's death hit her friends like a ton of bricks.

"I spoke to Natina two hours exactly before the accident at 8:26 p.m. She was really happy. She was in a good place. We were singing on the phone together, we were laughing, I would have never expected this to happen to her," said Fears-DeVoe.

In addition to singing, Reed was an actress, most notably appearing in the movie Bring It On.

Blaque was a successful group. Their debut album sold more than a million copies.

Williams and Fears-DeVoe credit Reed with helping them deal with the pressure and stress of success.

"Seeing her everyday was like waking up to a surprise. It was like waking up to a surprise every day," Williams said.

"You wouldn't never know what to expect with Natina. One day she showed up with a dog on the road, and she named him Travel. He traveled everywhere with us and she had a hamster one time named Blaque," said Fears-DeVoe.

Reed is survived by her son Tren.

"Her mother and father are very strong and they have God and they are going to be there for Tren. He has an amazing support system," Williams said.

Fears-DeVoe and Williams say the world lost a good person.

"I want her to come back and I want her to say 'hey girls, I am here.' But it's just not reality," Fears-DeVoe said.

Police said the driver of the car that hit Reed will not be charged.

Blaque was scheduled to begin recording a new album and reality show this week.

Funeral arraignments for Reed are pending.
