After 100 mph interstate chase, Covington police nab robbery suspects

Posted: Updated:

Two people were arrested Wednesday after police said they robbed a woman and then led police on a chase.

Covington police said at about 1 p.m. Wednesday, Robert Chastain, 29, and Kristin Callaway, 25, robbed a woman at Walmart in Covington.

"They were basically patrolling the Walmart parking lot for about 20 minutes before this occurred," said Covington police Capt. Ken Malcom.

According to police reports, the suspects snatched the victim's purse out of her cart and took off.

Prior to the chase, Malcom said the suspects dragged their robbery victim through the parking lot for about 300 yards.

Officers spotted the suspects' car on Interstate 20 near Almon Road.

Covington police said one of their officers chased the couple at speeds of more than 100 mph for 20 minutes as the alleged thieves tried to make their getaway.

The chase started in Newton County and went through Rockdale and DeKalb counties.

The chase ended at MLK Drive and Capitol Avenue in Atlanta.

Georgia State Patrol officers arrived to assist, and they were able to pin the suspects' vehicle and stop it.

The victim suffered scrapes and burns across her body but was released from the hospital without any broken bones.

A Covington officer sustained minor injuries, but he will be OK.

The couple are thought to be connected to robberies in at least five other states in the Southeast and Midwest.

Malcom said Chastain and Callaway had eluded authorities for a month before finally being arrested.

"Their past was committing crimes like this," said Malcom. "I'm sure their future also involved committing crimes like this.  We're fortunate to be able to get people this dangerous off the street."
