A 48-year-old man was hit and killed by a train Thursday night in Cartersville.

Police said John Martin Ceresoli was struck around 9:50 p.m. outside City Cellar restaurant on Museum Drive near West Main Street.

Witnesses said as Ceresoli was eating at the restaurant, he kept getting up, walking over to the train tracks, looking both ways, then coming back to his table to eat.

"We just met him tonight. He bummed a cigarette," a witness said. "He drank a glass of wine, but seemed to be acting as if he was on medication or needed to be."

On the last occasion of doing this, police said Ceresoli stood in the middle of the tracks facing an oncoming train.

As the train approached the man, witnesses said he turned and took a step toward the restaurant.

Ceresoli did not get off the tracks and was struck by the train.
