Women arrested on charges of targeting the elderly

Posted: Updated:

Cobb County Police arrested two women on charges of burglary and credit card fraud.

Police say there was a reported theft at the Heritage at Brookstone Assisted Living facility in Kennesaw in early October. The investigation led them to Candace Ballard, 31, and Jayne Phillips, 23, both of Woodstock.

Police believe the women targeted assisted living facilities while pretending to find placement for an elderly relative. While taking tours of the facilities, the women are accused of stealing jewelry, credit cards and computer equipment.

Three of the elderly victims live at Heritage in their 80s or 90s. It was those thefts in early October that broke the case wide open.

"Once detectives started looking into that theft, suddenly some of the credit cards started to be used at retail establishments," Sgt. Dana Pierce with Cobb County Police said.

Police found stolen items while executing a search warrant s at the suspects residence.

"There is literally a cache of jewelry that we just don't know and cannot identify where that's come from. We're just trying to get our arms around what has gone on here locally and then try to figure out where these ladies have been," Pierce said.

Cobb county detectives are working with other agencies in Cherokee and Fulton counties.   Police would like to return the stolen items to the victims, which they are still working to identify. Contact police if you believe you are a victim.
