Early voting wrapping up in Fulton County

FULTON COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

Friday is the last day to vote early for the 2012 presidential election, and in Fulton County, lines got longer as the day neared its end.

Fulton County election officials said the wait time was close to three hours at some locations and only 30 minutes at others.

There were six locations open for early voting, and voters could go to any location, regardless of assigned precinct, before closing time at 7.

On Election Day, voters must vote at their assigned precinct.

Sharon Mitchell, Fulton's Director of Elections and Registration said the county had a record number of people who voted early.

"We're a little surprised. We certainly prepared for large numbers. We did not anticipate that we would see to the degree activity, certainly at the beginning that we saw," said Mitchell.

Mitchell said besides some computer and staffing issues early on, there were no major problems during advanced voting.

She said the county is ready for Election Day.

"I believe I'm ready. We have started packing up to deliver equipment and we had our last series of poll worker training meeting with our mangers."

Fulton County released the early voting totals Saturday. A total of 152,563 voters took advantage of the early voting period between October 15 through November 2.
