CLAYTON COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

Joy Waye said she has a guardian angel named Gretel Thornton who she just met last Friday.

Waye was on her way to work at Mt. Zion Primary School on Friday morning. Waye said she was turning left from Highway 138 onto Mt. Zion Road when a truck hit her SUV, sending her into the side of the road. She said her air bags deployed and smoke was pouring from the vehicle.

"I just remember trying to get the door open and screaming for help," said Waye.

She said cars just sped by and some even navigated around the crash. Thornton was the only driver who stopped.

"I saw her knocking on the window. And, what if she got kids and the car blows up?" said Thornton.

Thornton said she used everything she had to pull the bent driver's side door open and get Waye out.

"It makes me teary-eyed thinking about what she did because she didn't have to do it and then to find out she's pregnant," said Waye.

Thornton is 7 1/2 months pregnant with her third child. She said in that moment she was focused on getting Waye out of the SUV.

"Sometime, you know, you realize you're pregnant, but you forget your pregnant," said Thornton.

"I believed she saved my life," said Waye. Waye did suffer bruises and a knee injury.

Waye has a family with three children of her own. She wanted to thank Thornton after the crash and she didn't have to go far.

"She told me who she was and we realized we work next door to each other," said Waye.

That morning, Waye was heading to work as a teacher at Mt. Zion Primary School and Thornton was driving to her teaching job at Mt. Zion Elementary.

They now have a real lesson to teach their students.

"If we can all understand, we are all human and if you take time out it will do a world of good," said Thornton.

"It just makes me feel good that we have people in this world who have tremendous character, like I said, she didn't have to do that. It was an unselfish act, and I will never forget," said Waye.
