A Newton High School coach posted $2,950 bond after he was arrested for enticing a child for indecent purposes, according to the Newton County Sheriff's Office.

In October, Newton County officials received a report that coach James Carter was sending inappropriate text messages to a 15-year-old female Newton High School student.

The teen's caregiver discovered the sexual text messages on an iPod, according to police.

As a result of the investigation, messages were able to be retrieved from Carter's cell phone as evidence.

"They are sexually oriented in nature," said Deputy Cortney Morrison with the Newton County Sheriff's Department. "They stem all the way back to the beginning of October."

The Newton County School System released a statement:

"These are very serious allegations - ones our school district did not take lightly. This type of behavior is unacceptable and will not be tolerated in Newton County Schools. The safety of our students is our primary concern. As such, the employee in question was immediately terminated."

CBS Atlanta News attempted to contact Carter at his Covington home, but no one answered the door.

Carter is charged with enticing a child for indecent purposes, which is a felony.

Investigators say the case is ongoing.
