Ga. agency issues public report on child deaths

Posted: Updated:

A new report shows 120 children died during the first nine months of 2012 in situations where their families had contact with the Georgia's child protection agency within the last five years.

Friday's report by the Division of Family and Children Services was the first such report to be released to the public by the state.

The commissioner of Georgia's Department of Human Services, Clyde Reese III, says the information will help child protection officials and others identify ways to prevent child deaths. He says the reports will be issued quarterly using a measurement system that allows for meaningful comparisons.

Natural causes were the most frequent cause of death, followed by accidents. Ten children died while in state custody, sometimes because of injuries suffered before they entered custody.
