Fulton County finally certifies election results

Posted: Updated:

Members of the Fulton County Board of Registration and Elections spent part of Saturday certifying votes for the general election.

Before making things official, the board went a step further to discuss future plans.

The meeting comes after yet another problem-filled general election for the county.

This year voters saw long and seemingly never-ending lines during early voting, and poll workers were holed up in a warehouse counting the more than 11,000 provisional ballots.

Fulton County voter Carmen Davis shared her voting experience with the board. She explained how despite having a valid passport, a poorly trained poll worker almost forced her to cast a provisional ballot.

"I just told him the last time I checked, a U.S. passport was a valid ID. He hesitated and the lady next to him nudged him along to, 'Go ahead and give her voting card,'" Davis said.

Board members listened to Davis and revealed their biggest challenge this year.

"The greatest challenge for early voting was staffing and getting that staff in place using the county system as it relates to getting staff in very quickly," said Sharon Mitchell, interim elections director.

Moving forward, some of the board's plans include improving worker training and IT support, and looking into better early voting locations to protect voters from inclement weather.

But when it comes to provisional ballots, the board believes they serve a real purpose when it comes to catching fraud.

Mitchell said the number of accepted and rejected ballots were about half-and-half.

"That was because people who were either felons that went through some of the rejections yesterday. We had people who were not eligible, people who were not registered in our county, [and] people who were not registered in the state."

Mitchell said this year's election was a good one, pointing out the success of getting more than 152,000 people through the early voting process.
