Doomsday Preppers: Are You Ready?

Posted: Updated:

It may seem like a crazy question, but some people do believe the end will come Dec. 21 2012.

A man from North Carolina named Ryan Croft doesn't believe the world will end completely, and he doesn't want it to. Croft likens "doomsday" to a great event, like the start of the war in Iraq, which could turn parts of the world upside down. Read more about Croft.

In November, CBS Atlanta News' Jennifer Banks spoke with Braxton & Kara Southwick. They are also from the show Doomsday Preppers.

The show follows various survivalists, or "preppers," preparing for the end of civilization.

The Southwick family doesn't expect the world to end on Friday either, but they are preparing for a possible bioterrorist attack in the near future.

Braxton Southwick and his family fear terrorists will attack the U.S. with smallpox, causing an epidemic that would kill thousands and cause widespread panic.

Professionally, he rides motorcycles and is a mechanic. He believes both skills will be handy in a doomsday event.

"We are preparing for a biological terrorist attack," said Braxton Southwick.

The family started collecting food 13 years ago, just by spending an extra $20 during each grocery store visit.

"We aren't out there preaching doom and gloom. We have normal lives, we are just preparing on the side in case something should happen," said Kara Southwick.

Banks asked the Southwicks what advice they have for other people.

Braxton Southwick said to always have a backpack filled with three days' worth of food and water.

He also suggested having a zip drive of all your important documents incase you have to leave your home in a moments notice.
