Amanda McCallister works for a towing company in Henry County. McCallister had an immediate reaction when she heard Henry County Officer Elgin Daniel died helping a man who ran out of gas.
"I was shocked and then I was angry. I was upset for the officer's family and friends," said McCallister.
McCallister was shocked and angry because she is familiar with Gordon Jarrett.
"I never seen his face before but I knew the name and I said, 'You got to be kidding me! He's out of gas again?'" said McCallister.
Jarrett was the stranded motorist on Highway 138 who ran out of gas in Henry County on Monday.
We spoke to him the night a hit-and-run driver struck Daniel and roadside assistant worker John Cook.
"I was behind the car, that's the only thing that saved me from not getting hit," Jarrett told CBS Atlanta the night of the crash.
McCallister said just a few weeks ago, Jarrett wrote her company four checks that bounced.
"On the 23rd, the 24th twice, the 27th and he tried on the 28th," said McCallister.
On all those occasions, Jarrett called the towing company because he said he was stranded and out of gas.
"They all happened within the North Henry Boulevard area," McCallister said.
Which is the same area Jarrett was in on Monday.
The driver, police said, hit and killed Daniel. Reuben Marin was arrested Tuesday and charged with homicide by vehicle.
McCallister wonders if the incident could have been avoided.
"If he was out of gas, then he was out of gas. If he wasn't and was just trying to get fuel again, then that situation may have been prevented," said McCallister.
Henry County police issued this statement:
"The Henry County Police Department is grateful for the media assistance with our hit-and-run investigation. We are building a solid case and are also planning a funeral for our fallen officer. In regards to the allegations on Gordon Jarrett, no reports of criminal activity have been located. Investigators are looking into the allegations that were brought to our attention from the media. If any criminal activity is discovered it will be presented to our prosecutors for review and media will be notified."
