Funeral services were held Friday afternoon for Officer Elgin Daniel, a Henry County police officer killed in a hit-and-run.
Jairus Daniel, Elgin's youngest son, spoke to CBS Atlanta News Thursday night during visitation.
"He was a good man. He meant a lot to a lot of people and he touched a lot of lives," said Jairus Daniel. "We found that out in the past couple days. So many people have come forward and reached out to us with so many small things he'd done and just to see the amount of difference, and change, and the number of people he's touched has been overwhelming."
Officers from all over metro Atlanta paid their respects to the man who was ripped from their lives Monday. Daniel retired from the DeKalb County Police Department two years ago and then went to work for Henry County police.
Henry County police said Ruben Marin-Garibay, 43, of Stockbridge crashed his Ford F-350 truck into Daniel while Daniel assisted a motorist who ran out of gas.
Within 24 hours of the accident, tips led investigators to Marin-Garibay's home on Bent Arrow Drive, just a couple miles from the accident scene.
Marin-Garibay is charged with vehicular homicide, serious injury by vehicle, failure to maintain lane, and hit-and-run.
Daniel is survived by his wife, daughter and two sons.
