The GBI is investigating an officer involved shooting that occurred in Conyers Friday morning.
"I'm like why did they shoot him, why did they shoot him," Witness Erascus Abong said.
Abong watched Pernell Presley, 21, stab his mother, 42-year-old Trisa Stallworth, outside the Eastmont Townhomes off Rockbridge Road around 8 a.m.
"He was even stabbing himself, poking at himself, poking at his neck and it was clear to me that this guy wasn't really all there and I'm just like 'no don't do that. I'm screaming don't do that,'" Abong said.
Abong said he tried to distract Presley until police arrived and he wasn't alone.
"I said 'please don't do that' and he grabbed her in a choke hold and started to stab her again. I said 'where are the cops when you need them? Where are the cops?' And about that time the paramedics showed up," Witness Deborah Hailey Forte said.
Witnesses said the paramedic knocked the butcher's knife out of Presley's hands and then police arrived.
"He charged at the officer, the officer fired three times, striking him three times and he went to the ground and was attempting to get back up and charged the officer again and a second officer deployed his taser, striking the subject with a taser," Conyers Police Lt. Jackie Dunn said.
Witnesses gave a very different account of what happened.
They said the 21-year-old Presley never got up after being shot and they felt police used excessive force.
"He didn't have any weapon on him and they shot him and I sat there and watched them shoot him," Abong said.
"If the guy is on the ground and not armed, do you feel like you used excessive force?" CBS Atlanta News reporter Adam Murphy asked.
"No, not at all," Dunn said.
"They threw handcuffs on him after they shot him and I was like 'I can't believe this.' After the man had been shot twice and was on the ground. I don't know him, I'd never seen him, but you don't treat people like that," Abong said.
Conyers police said Presley is in serious, but stable condition.
Stallworth is in stable condition with nine stab wounds.
The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave, pending the outcome of the investigation.
