Deal: Ga. won't create health care exchanges

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA (AP) -

Gov. Nathan Deal says Georgia will not create the health insurance exchanges required under President Barack Obama's health care overhaul.

The Republican governor wrote a letter to federal officials Friday saying the Democratic president was taking a one-size fits all approach and criticized the law for placing costs on states.

Deal said the federal government should loosen regulations that restrict state options on health care.

After the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the health care overhaul, Deal announced that Georgia would wait until after the presidential election to decide whether to proceed with implementing it.

Prominent Republicans had hoped that GOP candidate Mitt Romney would repeal or eliminate all or part of the law had he been elected.
