RIVERDALE, GA (CBS46) -

Investigators in Clayton County are still trying to figure out what caused a massive fire at a Family Dollar store near Riverdale on Tuesday.

Firefighters said the structure is still very unstable, so investigators can't get in to look for clues.

Meanwhile, other businesses in the shopping center are trying to get things back to normal. That hasn't been easy because at one point some owners didn't think they would have a business to go back to.

Sunni Wolfe works at the Barber Shop in the corner of the complex.

"It was just smoke covering up the whole parking lot. You couldn't see the flames at first but later they were coming from the top of the roof," Wolfe said.

It didn't take long for the entire complex to be evacuated and it caught some businesses by surprise.

"I had to use some speedy cuts just to get hair done, but it was an emergency situation so we had to make sure all employees and customers were out of the building at the time," Wolfe said.

But at that point, the fire was still going. It continued to burn for hours, which had some people a little nervous that it was going to spread down the line.

Firefighters said that luckily the fire walls did their job and kept that from happening.

"They are instrumental in stopping fire spread. If fire walls had not been here, the adjacent buildings and businesses would have suffered much more damage," said Capt. Walter Barber with the Clayton County Fire Department.

Surrounding businesses are now praising those simple walls that made such a huge and obvious difference.

"That's probably the only thing that saved the other businesses on sides of Family Dollar," Wolfe said.

Investigators said it could take weeks to figure out what started the fire.
