Smyrna officer suspended amid investigation

SMYRNA, GA (CBS46) -

The Smyrna Police Department suspended an officer pending the conclusion of an internal investigation.

Cobb County police arrested and charged Officer Whitfield with simple assault, simple battery, cruelty to children third degree, and hindering persons making emergency telephone call.

According to Cobb County police reports, Whitfield's son called 911 and said some type of domestic violence was going on and needed the police.

During the call, Whitfield took the phone and said everything was OK, according to reports.

Whitfield said he and his wife are going through a divorce and they were having an issue.

Cobb County officers responded to the home. They said his son seemed very afraid and was crying.

According to reports, Whitfield's wife left the house when Whitfield took the phone from his son.

Officers spoke with Whitfield's wife and took her statement.

Officer Whitfield was arrested and held at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center and bonded out of jail.

The internal investigation is still ongoing.

Officer Whitfield was a member of the Smyrna Police Department for eight years and was currently assigned to the Uniform Patrol Division.
