Lawmakers oppose recommendation to remove Sheriff-Elect Victor Hill

ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Members of the Clayton County Legislative Delegation expressed their opposition on Monday to a recommendation to remove Sheriff-Elect Victor Hill and replace him with someone else.

"It's premature and by naming a replacement in my opinion it's already suggesting guilt," State Sen. Valencia Seay said.

State lawmakers said they were appalled to learn that the Georgia Sheriff's Association made the request considering the former sheriff was elected to return to his position and should be innocent until proven guilty.

"I don't want any organization to come in and poison the minds of the juries that may hear this case," State Rep. Darryl Jordan said.

Hill is facing a 37-count felony indictment that essentially accuses him of running the sheriff's office, during his previous term, like a criminal enterprise for his own personal gain.

"We stand to make sure that due process works," State Sen. Gail Davenport said.

These lawmakers said the recommendation for removal as sheriff was a total disrespect to the voters in Clayton County.

"The voters were crystal clear when they elected sheriff elect. They were crystal clear when they rejected the former sheriff," Seay said.

CBS Atlanta News contacted the Georgia Sheriff's Association for a response, but they have not yet responded.
