ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Representatives from the Woodruff Arts Center said Tuesday that a former employee embezzled over $1.4 million.

Another employee uncovered the suspected fraud while reviewing outstanding invoices and reported it to Chief Executive Officer Virginia Hepner.

It is alleged the former employee, who representatives did not name, stole $1,438,000 over five years.

The center said the employee worked outside the financial area and is no longer with the organization. No other Woodruff Arts Center employees are believed to have been involved.

"We took immediate steps to bring in an independent financial expert to ensure the integrity of our finances," said Hepner, who joined the Woodruff Arts Center in July after a 25-year career in banking and corporate finance. "We are focusing on every role and system that touches financial matters, and have already begun making process and personnel changes."

The Woodruff Arts Center has advised the U.S. Attorney's Office of its internal investigation and is prepared to turn over the results of the investigation to them.

Formal charges have not yet been filed.

The Woodruff Arts Center, which has an annual operating budget of approximately $100 million, is pursuing recovery options.
