Old Ford plant breathes new life for Porsche

Porsche has big plans for the old Ford plant near Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

"This place where you are standing, in 18 months, will be absolutely top notch," said Detlev Von Platen, the President and CEO of Porsche North America.

At the groundbreaking ceremony for the new facility Tuesday, Von Platen raved about the $100 million project that features a new state of the art building and race track.

"You are behind the wheel of a Porsche, testing the Porsche on a test drive. Then you want some food and you have a nice restaurant. You want to have a meeting, you have a business center. You want to see our classic cars restored? Our classical car restoration museum will be there," said Von Platen.

Gov. Nathan Deal and Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed say they teamed up and crossed the political aisle because the project will strengthen them local economy.

"It means good jobs. Porsche has had a presence here for many years, and to have Atlanta selected as their North American headquarters is truly a distinction for our state," said Deal.

Officials say the project involves 400 jobs, including 100 new high paying jobs. Reed says he believes this is just the beginning.

"This is the future. You are going to see more and more businesses locate next to the most successful airport in the United States of America," said Reed.
