FORSYTH COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

A Forsyth County man was killed after he and his son fell from a tree stand while hunting.

Jeff McBryant, 44, and his son Elijah were hunting in a wooded area near the Forsyth-Gwinnett county line.

The family told CBS Atlanta that Elijah and his dad were in separate tree stands when a deer came up to them.

McBryant wanted his son to get the shot, so they tried to switch tree stands. That was when they fell between 15 and 20 feet to the ground.

Authorities said rescuers struggled to find the pair in the darkness, and were finally able to find them by tracking a cell phone signal off of Old Atlanta Road in the Suwanee area on Monday evening.

Elijah suffered injuries to his spinal cord, but he is recovering from surgery at Northside Hospital-Forsyth.

Jeff McBryant leaves behind his wife Lisa, son Elijah and daughter Carly Beth.
