GWINNETT COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

Authorities said a Gwinnett County police officer was struck by a driver that fell asleep at the wheel.

On Friday just after 5:00 a.m. Officer Hayden McCall was struck head-on at the intersection of Grayson Parkway and Brackin Trace.

This intersection is at the entrance of Starling Elementary School.

Officer McCall was stopped in the left turn lane of Grayson Parkway when James Snyder, 50, crossed into northbound lanes at the intersection and hit the  median, according to reports.

Snyder's car hit a sign just before striking the patrol car.

The officer and Snyder were taken to Gwinnett Medical Center with minor injuries.

Snyder was cited for failure to maintain a single lane and driving on the wrong side of the road.

Alcohol and speed were not factors in this accident. Investigators said it appears that Snyder fell asleep at the wheel.
