Inmate accidentally released is recaptured

Posted: Updated:

DeKalb Sheriff's Office Fugitive Squad and SWAT Team recaptured Joel Ledarius Harper after a three-hour standoff at his family home on Cedar Rock Drive in Lithonia.

Harper, 22, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for two counts of armed robbery and one count of aggravated assault on Aug. 31, 2012.

He was released from the DeKalb County Jail because of an administrative error on Nov. 21.

Fugitive Squad investigators received information leading them to 5276 Cedar Rock Dr. and set up undercover surveillance around 5 p.m. Friday.

After surrounding the house, investigators concluded that Harper was inside with his 4-year-old daughter.

Harper would not surrender. SWAT entered the home and apprehended Harper who was hiding in a bedroom closet. SWAT members found his daughter unharmed in an upstairs bedroom.

Harper was transported to the DeKalb County Jail without further incident. His daughter was returned to her family members.

Sheriff Thomas Brown has taken the necessary steps to ensure such administrative errors are not repeated.
