Man arrested for allegedly taking down officer at dog park
DUNWOODY, GA (CBS46) -
Dunwoody police responded to an altercation at the Brook Run Dog Park early Saturday.
Investigators said David Dawson, a known troublemaker at the dog park, was involved in a verbal altercation with another person, which turned physical when an off-duty Dekalb County police officer tried to break things up.
Officer Jamie Payton said she attempted to defuse the verbal altercation with Dawson and another person but he refused to comply. Payton said she attempted to place Dawson under arrest but he began to struggle with her.
Investigators said the suspect was able to get the upper hand and threw the officer to the ground, pinning her down by placing his knee on her throat.
The officer said she was on the verge of passing out when a citizen jumped in to help.
Laine Swiney, president of the Dog Park Association, told CBS Atlanta News that David Dawson began having run-ins with people in the dog park over the past four months or so.
"I suspected something like this would happen. Maybe this will allow us to ban him from the park before someone gets seriously hurt," Swiney said. "He had been just fine up until these past few months."
Niki Keiser, a regular at the dog park, told CBS Atlanta News she had a recent run-in with Dawson when he yelled at her when one of his dogs came up to her sniffing for doggie treats.
"I really thought he was talking to his dog because I've never had anyone talk to me that way, so angry," Keiser said.
Dawson was arrested.
Investigators said Officer Payton and David Dawson suffered minor injuries in the scuffle.
