A special team of Gwinnett County investigators is looking into a deadly officer-involved shooting in Buford.

Three Gwinnett County officers shot and killed a man outside an apartment complex on North Alexander Street just after 9 p.m. Tuesday.

The Gwinnett County Medical Examiner's Office has confirmed that the deceased man is Jose Antonio Hernandez-Gonzales, 20, of Buford.

According to Cpl. Jake Smith, a spokesman for the Gwinnett County Police Department, an officer approached a group of men suspected of smoking marijuana. Other officers responded to assist him with frisking the men.

As officers approached Hernandez-Gonzalez, he pulled away. "He produced a revolver from somewhere in his pants," said Smith.

Hernandez-Gonazlez then pointed the gun toward his own head, Smith said. Officers demanded that he drop his weapon. One officer fired a Taser at Hernandez-Gonzalez, but it didn't seem to stun him.

"The suspect pulled the prongs out, and right after he pulled the prongs out, he pointed the gun at the officers," said Smith. "Three officers fired, and the suspect was struck and killed."

"It sounded like a pack of firecrackers," said Randall Mewborn, who was nearby when the shooting happened.

"I got a call saying that one of my best friends had a gun to his head, and police were surrounding him," said Kellam Sadler. "And then about five  minutes later, I got a phone call saying that he had been shot over 12 times."

"I asked one of the officers why they shot him so many times, and he got in my face and told me I needed to go before I got arrested because I was invoking a crowd," said Mewborn.

Members of the Deadly Force Investigation Team worked the crime scene, which is standard procedure for officer-involved shootings in Gwinnett County. The team includes crime scene detectives, medical examiners and representatives of the Gwinnett County District Attorney's Office.
