Future of Fulton County Animal Shelter on the line

FULTON COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

The mistreatment of animals at Fulton County's animal shelter took center stage at Wednesday's County Commission meeting.

The commission was looking at the possibility of extending the contract for the current vendor, but they failed to reach an agreement two separate times.

The first vote was to deny the extension and the second was to approve it, but both failed to get a majority vote because one commissioner abstained and the rest were split.

Volunteers who used to work at the shelter said it's in bad shape. Some even used the word disgusting. "There's food that's left out, rat infestation. There are turds all over the place. You can see ceiling tiles falling apart," said Cindy Lubitz, who used to volunteer.

And with problems like that, Lubitz and other volunteers said the commission should not give the vendor another chance.

Former volunteer Robby Caban collected pictures, videos and documents of the poor conditions. "A taxpayer would be appalled," said Caban.

"I think it's absurd. It's like saying let's let someone who is ineffective lead an organization and let's give them a renewal," said Lubitz.

But commission members who voted for the extension said it's not that simple. Chairman John Eaves said by law someone has to do it, and there's no one else.

"We've been caught between a rock and a hard place that we just don't have many options to choose from," said Eaves.

But the volunteers said that's just not true.

"There is another qualified bidder who has extended an offer to take on problems at animal control. They have a lifesaving philosophy. All the volunteers are behind this," said Caban.

It's something commissioners said the extra two weeks opens the door to.

"If there's anything good news or silver lining to no decision being made its we can entertain any possible options out there," said Eaves.
