Clayton County Deputy out of hospital following shootout with suspect

CLAYTON COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

Less than 24 hours after sustaining a gunshot wound during a shootout with a suspect, a Clayton County Sheriff's Deputy is out of the hospital and recovering at his home, according to the sheriff's department.

The suspect, Jalen Ricks, 19, was shot and killed Thursday morning by the three deputies who pursued him through a neighborhood after Ricks was seen speeding through a school zone.

During the chase, deputies lost Ricks in a neighborhood near Jonesboro High School. Neighbors saw Ricks leave his car with a high-powered rifle and run into the woods, according to authorities. When deputies arrived, they said Ricks lay down in a wood line and began shooting at officers with the rifle.

That's when the deputy was shot, and three sheriff's department SWAT members returned fire, killing Ricks.

A spokesman for the Clayton County Sheriff's Department said the name of the injured deputy has not yet been released.

As is standard protocol for all officer involved shootings, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is conducting an investigation to determine if the shooting was justified.
