Surveillance video leads detectives to suspected robber targeting people through Craigslist

Posted: Updated:

Gwinnett County police said surveillance video from the parking lot of the Gwinnett Place Mall is helping them move in on two armed robbery suspects.

Police said the suspects found two victims on Craigslist and robbed them on Wednesday.

The incident captured in the mall parking lot happened in the afternoon. A man was selling two rare pairs of sneakers with a value of $600. The video shows him meeting the two suspects outside his car, one of the men showing a gun and then taking off with the shoes.

Detectives said Craigslist robberies occur all the time, but this one was different because it was caught on camera.

Officers traced the license plate of the getaway car, which led them to one of the suspect's home. They found one pair of sneakers and an iPhone 5 stolen in another robbery earlier that day. Officers said they just missed arresting the suspect, Broderick Sellers.

"He had just left the house when we got there. In fact, the shower was still running," said Detective C.J. Flynn.

Flynn said Sellers does not have a criminal record.

"From everything we can tell it's just items they wanted," said Sellers.

Officers said the two men selling items through Craigslist did exactly what they should have done when setting up the meetings. They met the potential buyers in a crowded, public place and got out of their vehicle. Police said the only safer spot to have met was the police station parking lot.
