APS board to vote on superintendent’s contract Monday

Posted: Updated:

Atlanta Public Schools Superintendent Erroll Davis will hear his fate with the district Monday.

The APS Board of Education has delayed its vote on whether or not to extend Davis' contract multiple times. Davis originally agreed to a one-year contract with the district. That period was over in July.

Board Chair Reuben McDaniel said he knows how he will vote on Monday.

"I really feel like he's done a good job," McDaniel said. "And I think from a stability perspective, we wanted to have him in place while we search for the next superintendent for the city of Atlanta."

But does Davis himself want to stay? In October, Davis joked with CBS Atlanta News that his biggest accomplishment this past year was "staying alive."

He certainly had a stressful year, after dealing with the district nearly losing its accreditation with SACS, a CRCT cheating scandal and heated redistricting meetings. But McDaniel said he believes Davis would be interested in staying on for a bit longer.

"Certainly he's agreed that he wants to continue to do some work and help get strategic planning started," McDaniel said.

Davis said earlier this year that he was interested in bringing "career academies" to the district - high schools that would offer students job training.

McDaniel said the board would vote on a one- or two-year contract extension but would immediately begin searching for his successor.

"We understand that Mr. Davis is not going to be a 10-year superintendent at Atlanta Public Schools," McDaniel said. "So we're really trying to put in a process and begin working on that, tomorrow and also in January, putting together a search process to find the best superintendent for Atlanta."
